Majority of U.S. Voters Support a Third Trump Impeachment, New Poll Finds

Americans Say It’s Time for Congress to Do Its Job and Hold the President Accountable

A growing majority of American voters—across party lines—now say it’s time to hold President Donald Trump accountable once again. According to a newly released poll, 52% of likely U.S. voters support a third impeachment of Trump, just months into his controversial return to the Oval Office.

The survey, conducted by Data for Progress between April 18 and 21 and commissioned by ASO Communications and the Research Collaborative, reveals striking bipartisan concern over Trump’s ongoing behavior and its impact on American democracy. The numbers show strong backing for impeachment across the political spectrum: 84% of Democrats, 55% of Independents, and even 20% of Republicans voiced support for initiating a new impeachment process.

The poll further underscores the view that congressional Democrats have a constitutional responsibility to act. When asked if Democrats in Congress should pursue impeachment, the largest share of respondents—46%—said lawmakers must act to remove Trump from office due to repeated violations of constitutional rights and the law. This view was shared by a broad coalition of Americans: 80% of Democrats, 52% of Independents, and nearly 10% of Republicans.

Conversely, 38% of respondents believe Trump has not committed impeachable offenses, and 17% expressed concern that an impeachment effort would appear performative or politically damaging if unsuccessful.

Advocates say this moment presents an opportunity for congressional leaders to reaffirm their commitment to the Constitution and demonstrate moral courage. “Americans across the country refuse to let Trump and his allies destroy our democracy,” said Alexandra Flores-Quilty, Campaign Director at Free Speech for People, the national nonpartisan organization spearheading the “Impeach Trump Again” movement. “It’s up to Congress to do their job, defend the Constitution, and impeach and remove Donald Trump from office for his grave abuses of power.”

Free Speech for People has launched a national petition that has already gathered more than 370,000 signatures. The organization has meticulously documented a range of alleged abuses since Trump’s inauguration, including unconstitutional actions against immigrants, retributive efforts against critics, attacks on voting rights, and interference with local and federal judicial processes—such as reportedly influencing the dismissal of criminal charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

These concerns are not isolated. Additional recent surveys mirror a growing national disillusionment with Trump’s leadership during his second term. A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted from April 21 to 24 found that 66% of voters view Trump’s second term as “chaotic,” 59% describe it as “scary,” and 54% disapprove of the job he is doing. Alarmingly, 53% say the country is heading in the wrong direction.

A separate ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll taken from April 18 to 22 shows similar trends: 55% of respondents disapprove of Trump’s job performance, and a majority believe he is “going too far” in expanding presidential power. Concerns cited include efforts to shut down federal agencies, mass layoffs of civil servants, political retribution against opponents, and efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the public and private sectors.

Despite the GOP’s narrow control of Congress, efforts to initiate impeachment are already underway. On April 22, Representative Shri Thanedar (D-MI) filed seven articles of impeachment against Trump, citing a range of constitutional violations. Meanwhile, Representative Al Green (D-TX), a longtime critic of the former president, announced plans at a recent rally in Washington, D.C., to introduce new articles of impeachment within 30 days. “Mr. President, this David is coming for you,” Green said, invoking the biblical David vs. Goliath metaphor in reference to the fight for justice.

The polling memo accompanying the Data for Progress survey notes that public support for Trump’s impeachment is already at levels seen during his two previous impeachments—even before the full scope of a public case has been presented. This presents a key opportunity, advocates say, for Congress to build that case and restore public trust by taking a bold stand for the rule of law.

As the nation continues to grapple with rising political tension, constitutional concerns, and deepening divisions, one thing is clear: more and more Americans believe that Donald Trump must be held accountable once and for all—not for politics, but for the future of democracy itself.
